Woodman’s of Essex

About an hour outside of Boston, a trip to Woodman’s is a summer tradition. If you go at peak time on a beautiful day you could be waiting in line for awhile but it’s worth it. Woodman’s offers all kinds of fried seafood – whole belly clams, scallops, shrimp, fish – as well as freshly boiled lobster of all sizes. There’s nothing better than sitting outside enjoying a seafood feast.

Richardson’s Ice Cream

Richardson’s is the follow-up summer tradition to Woodman’s. Located in Middleton, the 30 minute drive plus the wait in line gives us enough time to digest our seafood feast and make room for ice cream. Unlike its town counterparts, Richardson’s is generous and inexpensive by comparison. A small cone is two scoops of ice cream and costs less than $4. The Middleton location also offers mini golf, batting cages, and a driving range if you want to have a fun evening with the family.

Russell Orchards

Russell Orchards is the fall counterpart to Woodman’s. For a girl who grew up in the tropics, the change of seasons is a miracle and autumn is particularly fascinating. I’m not sure there’s any place better to experience the beauty of autumn than New England with the fall colors and, of course, apple picking. In addition to apple picking, Russell Orchards has a winery and a bakery that makes fresh cider donuts.

Kleos

Until recently I had not spent a lot of time in Providence even though it’s just an hour south of Boston. There are a number of wonderful restaurants but I will highlight just one – the Greek food at Kleos. Rather than ordering entrees (which look both generous and delicious) we prefer to focus on the sharing plates. My favorite is the Tsatziki Tower – delicately fried slices of eggplant and zucchini on a tzatziki spread.
