Chocolate Cereal Treats

December 24, 2020

I’m always looking for delicious treats to share with friends and family. And especially around the holidays, simple and easy is key. Not much could be simpler than Rice Krispies treats, but this version adds a chocolaty twist to the original.

The recipe starts with butter, a bag of marshmallows, and cereal. In this case, Cocoa Pebbles are swapped out for the Rice Krispies but you could use any chocolate puff cereal like Cocoa Krispies or Cocoa Puffs.

Like a pineapple upside down cake, chocolate chips and crushed pretzels line the bottom of the pan and the cereal-marshmallow mixture is layered on top. When the bars are ready to serve, they are inverted to show the melted chocolate and pretzel topping.

Use this recipe as a guide and feel free to mix things up – swap out white chocolate or peanut butter chips for the chocolate chips. Add finely chopped nuts or festive sprinkles to the topping. Whatever you create, people will love it!

Chocolate Cereal Treats with Crushed Pretzels

  • Author: She’s Almost Always Hungry
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 36 1x

Description

These chocolaty cereal treats were inspired by a recipe created by Milk Bar. It features chocolate cereal, chocolate chips, and pretzels for a sweet-salty-chocolaty bite.

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup chocolate chips

10 pretzel rods

Coarse sea or kosher salt, optional

5 tablespoons unsalted butter

10.5 ounce bag mini-marshmallows

8 cups Cocoa Pebbles* cereal

Instructions

Spray a 9” x 13” baking pan with baking spray.

Place pretzels in a sealed zip top bag and break into small chunks, enough to equal 1 cup of pretzel pieces.

Sprinkle the chocolate chips and pretzels pieces onto the bottom of the pan, spreading to make an even layer. Lightly sprinkle salt (not too much, just a light sprinkle).

In a heavy bottom pot, melt the butter and bag of marshmallows together over low heat. When the mixture is smooth, remove from heat. Add the Cocoa Pebbles and stir until the cereal is well coated.

Spread the cereal mixture over the chocolate chips and pretzels. Lightly press down the cereal mixture using a greased spatula or with waxed paper. Let cool until firm, 15 to 20 minutes**.

Cut the treats into 36 small bars (6 rows of 6 bars each). Store in an airtight container on your counter for up to 5 days (if they last that long).

Notes

*Cocoa Krispies or Cocoa Puffs can be used instead of Cocoa Pebbles

**Depending on the weather and humidity, the treats may set up better in the refrigerator
