Smoked Salmon Spread

New Year’s Eve in Hawaii usually means a big gathering of family and friends and a pot luck with foods representing all kinds of cuisine – sashimi, fried noodles, siu ji yuk, sushi. Our family’s contributions are often fried mundoo and Okinawan sweet potato and haupia pie.

As with everything in 2020, this year was different. Our celebration was limited to our small family, but we still wanted to make it special. We found the answer in something unexpected, Ina Garten’s Smoked Salmon Spread. Easy to make and delicious to eat, this spread fit into the unofficial “eat what makes you happy” theme of the evening. We’ve made it a few times since and will probably make it a part of our go-to favorites.

Other than boosting the amounts of a few ingredients – dill, lemon juice, and horseradish – this recipe follows Ina’s original. We found it to be equally tasty with baguette slices and crackers. And if you want to be a little healthier, it’s great with crudité.

Smoked Salmon Spread

This easy to pull together spread is equally good on crackers, baguette slices, and crudité.

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoon minced fresh dill
  • 2 teaspoon prepared horseradish, drained
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ pound (4 ounces) smoked salmon, minced


  1. Cream the cheese in an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment until just smooth. Add the sour cream, lemon juice, dill, horseradish, salt, and pepper, and mix. Add the smoked salmon and mix well.
  2. Chill and serve with crackers, baguette slices, and crudité.


Ina's note, "If you can find it, I prefer Norwegian salmon; it's drier and less salty than other smoked salmon."

We like the flavors of fresh dill, fresh lemon juice, and horseradish. The amounts in this recipe are doubled from Ina's original.
