Celebrating National Ice Cream Day

July 15, 2022

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Nothing beats the heat of summer like a frozen treat. Although we have been enjoying ice cream in its many forms for centuries, there wasn’t an officially designated celebration day until 1984 when President Regan declared the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day. In fact he designated the entire month of July as National Ice Cream Month.

This year, National Ice Cream Day falls on July 17. To help celebrate, here are some of our favorites – you’ll note that a lot of them are no-churn ice creams because I adore sweetened condensed milk and easy recipes! For more ideas and other frozen treats, check out the complete list.

S’mores Ice Cream

S’mores are the quintessential summer camp dessert. Turning s’mores into an ice cream to eat on its own or to sandwich between graham crackers with some marshmallow fluff – that’s amazing!

Black Pepper Ice Cream

If you’re looking for something a little unexpected, try David Lebovitz’s Black Pepper Ice Cream. This is an assertive ice cream that is a perfect foil for the sweetness of the sticky toffee pudding. It’s worth trying, even if you reduce the amount of black pepper.

Nigella Lawson’s No-Churn Coffee Ice Cream

This is the very first no-churn ice cream I made. It changed my view of how ice creams are made and inspired several of my own creations. But this remains the OG no-churn in my repertoire.

No-Churn Coconut Ice Cream

Sweetened condensed coconut milk is a game changer and inspired this tropical no-churn ice cream. Keep it simple or top with toasted coconut and a little chocolate sauce.

No-churn ube ice cream

No-Churn Ube Ice Cream

This brilliantly purple frozen treat is the latest addition to the no-churn ice cream recipes. Ube sweetened condensed milk gives the ice cream its beautiful color and subtle, earthy ube flavor.
