Hawaii Feasting – New and Newly Rediscovered

July 22, 2022

We have been eating so much delicious food, we just had to share with you our latest discoveries…

New to me…

Chubbies Burgers

I first tried Chubbies just before they closed their food truck at the Ohana Marketplace. I was pleased to discover they opened a brick-and-mortar location not far from my house in Kaimuki town. They have delicious but coma-inducing food. The burgers are delicious and the onion rings are amazing. I can’t wait to check out their new digs.

Cocina de Mama

Cocina de Mama is a regular fixture at Saturday’s KCC Farmer’s Market. I passed it several times before trying it and now I look forward to visiting each weekend. They serve three types of ceviche (fish, shrimp, or combo), fresh salsa, and fresh tostadas. The ceviche is super fresh and so tasty.

Holey Grail Donuts

When you enter Holey Grail Donuts, you won’t find bakery cases filled with tasty treats. This is because everything is fried to order so you are guaranteed to get hot, fresh donuts every time. What makes these donuts unique is the use of taro as its starch and frying them in coconut oil, both produce a flavorful cake donut. The toppings are enticing flavors like lilikoi, POG, and saffron snickerdoodle. Can’t decide? Then get the tasting box and let Holey Grail decide for you.

The Kaka’ako location recently relocated to the Whole Foods building on Kamakee Street.

The Surfing Pig

I have only been to this cute eatery in Kaimuki town for brunch but what a delicious meal it was. The portions were generous, the staff was friendly, and the food was tasty. What more could we ask for?

Wallflour Bake Shop

I love small artisan bakeries. I discovered Wallflour one day as I was driving past ‘ili ‘ili Cash & Carry (another favorite of mine). On Mondays when ‘ili ‘ili is closed, Wallflour has a popup shop. You can order treats online the week prior and stop by to pick them up. The breads have the beautiful chew and crust that I love. The pastries are flaky and full of flavors like lilikoi or chocolate. If you can’t make it to the Monday pop-up, you can also find them at the Kaka’ako Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.

Newly rediscovered

Koko Head Cafe

A couple of months ago, Koko Head Cafe moved down the street to a slightly larger location with outdoor space so, of course, we had to check it out. The regular menu is just as tasty – I love the Volcano Eggs (their version of shakshuka) – and it’s hard to resist ordering one of everything on their daily menu of pastries.

Piggy Smalls

While we love their chicken wings (and order them every time), we recently tried the escargot, served with a green curry sauce and fried garlic, and the chopped liver. Both dishes had a Southeast Asian twist and were delicious.

Small Kine Farm

If there is one stall we always go to at the KCC Farmer’s Market, it’s Small Kine Farms. We usually get a combo of fried mushrooms (fresh from the farm) and zucchini. Recently we tried the fried risotto cakes and they were amazing! Crunchy on the outside, creamy and full of delicious mushroom umami on the inside. The trio plate is our new favorite!
